Summer Literacy and Numeracy

The Halton Catholic District School Board’s Thomas Merton Centre for Continuing Education is pleased to be offering Literacy and Math Summer Programs for Grades 6, 7, and 8 students. Classes run Monday to Friday from July 4 – July 15, 2022 (Session 1) and July 18 – July 29, 2022 (Session 2) from 8:00 am – 1:30 pm.

Please note that due to the current COVID-19 situation, the health and well-being of our students continues to remain our highest priority.

NOTE: Teachers will be committed to providing an engaging educational experience and interactive lessons in a virtual format to review the past school year, in preparation for next year. Educators will provide live and/or pre-recorded lessons for all students.


Numeracy Program

This two-week summer program is designed for students who would benefit from additional practice and assistance to ease their transition into Grade 7, 8 & 9. Students will participate in engaging lessons to meet their individual needs and learning styles.

Literacy Program

Students can be initially engaged in reading by focusing on their comprehension and enjoyment of a given story, poem, blog, or news report. Fundamentally, balanced literacy revolves around two primary strands, are a reading strand and a writing strand, each of which mirrors the other. Engaging lessons will be provided to ensure all students’ needs and learning styles are met.

Please note:

  • Principal and teacher recommendations are requested for these programs; however, parents may initiate an application.
  • This year’s Grade 6, 7, & 8 Summer School Programs will be offered through remote/virtual format with synchronous learning.
  • You will be contacted ONLY if your course is full or cancelled.
  • Student transportation to and from the summer school programs will not be provided. Parents are responsible for transportation arrangements for all programs.
